Winter Skincare: Why Your Skin Needs Extra TLC Now

When temperatures drop, your skin is often the first to protest. Tightness, dry patches, or a dull complexion: these are common signs. But why does your skin react so strongly to winter? And more importantly: what can you do about it?

Welcome to Mayteo's blog. In this first article, we delve into the science behind winter skin and share a simple routine to keep your skin barrier strong, soft, and radiant—no matter what the thermometer says.

Why winter is so hard on your skin

You'd think the freezing temperatures outside are the only culprit, but the biggest enemy often lies inside. In winter, the central heating runs at full blast. This causes extremely low humidity in the house.

The result? The dry air literally "pulls" moisture from your skin. At the same time, the cold outside slows your blood circulation and weakens your skin barrier. This causes moisture to evaporate even faster, giving irritants free rein. Your skin craves protection.

Ingredients that actually work

In summer, you want light textures, but in winter, your skin needs comfort food. When choosing your products, look for these powerhouses:

  • Hyaluronic Acid: A moisture magnet that can hold up to 1000x its own weight in water.

  • Ceramides: The 'cement' between your skin cells that repairs the barrier.

  • Natural Oils (such as Jojoba or Squalane): These form a protective layer over the skin so that moisture cannot escape.

  • Panthenol (Vitamin B5): Instantly soothes red, irritated skin.

Your Winter Routine in 4 Steps

You don't have to overhaul your entire bathroom cabinet, but a few smart adjustments can make a world of difference.

1. Cleanse gently (don't strip!) Many cleansers are too harsh for winter skin. If your face feels tight after washing, your cleanser is too strong.

2. Layering is key. Just as you wear a tank top, sweater, and jacket in winter, layer your skincare routine. After cleansing, apply a hydrating serum first.

3. "Lock it in" with a richer cream. A serum hydrates, but a cream protects. In winter, your day cream can be a bit richer. Do you have very dry skin? Mix a drop of facial oil into your night cream for extra replenishment while you sleep.

4. Don't forget your SPF (Really!) It's the biggest myth in skincare: "I don't need sunscreen in the winter." Wrong. UV rays are always there, even when it's cloudy. They're the number one cause of skin aging. So always end your morning routine with protection.

Listen to your skin

Your skin isn't static; it changes with the seasons. Feeling extra dry today? Apply more frequently. Seeing redness? Take a step back on the active ingredients.

At Mayteo, we believe in the power of nature to bring your skin back into balance. Give your skin the softness it deserves, and you'll find that you can maintain that beautiful, healthy glow even in winter.
