How to read a skincare label? 5 things to look out for You apply it to your face every day, but do you actually know what's in it? Most people turn a bottle over, see a list of unpronounceable words, and put it back down. What a waste. Because that list contains everything you need to know to determine whether a product truly helps your skin (or not). In this article, you'll learn how to read a skincare label in 5 steps. No chemistry degree needed. Just clearly explained, with examples from our own product range. 1. The INCI list: the language every label speaks Turn over any skincare product and you'll see a list of Latin and English names. That's the INCI list, the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. It is legally required in the EU and written the same way all over the world. Why is that useful? Because it means that "Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil" is jojoba oil everywhere in the world, regardless of the language on the front of the product. If you have an allergy or are looking for a specific ingredient, you can always find it in the INCI list. The most important rule: ingredients are listed in order of highest to lowest concentration. The first ingredient is present in the largest amount, the last in the smallest. If a brand prominently displays an ingredient on the front but it only appears fifteenth in the INCI list, then you know enough. Example: Nourishing Facial Oil Take our Nourishing Facial Oil (€29.90). The INCI list begins with: Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Decyl Cocoate, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Extract, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Fruit Extract... What stands out? The very first ingredient is jojoba oil. Not water, not a filler, but an active oil right away. That immediately tells you that this product is seriously formulated. The list contains a total of 11 organic oils and extracts, and you can recognize them all by the ➀ symbol next to them: that means "from organic cultivation." Compare that to a random face oil from the supermarket. Chances are the first ingredients are Paraffinum Liquidum (mineral oil) or Cyclopentasiloxane (silicones). Not necessarily bad, but it's good to know what you're buying. 2. "Natural" isn't always natural This is perhaps the biggest pitfall in skincare. The word "natural" is not protected. Any brand can put it on the packaging, even if the product contains only 10% natural ingredients. There is no law prohibiting that. So how do you know if a product is truly natural? By looking for certifications and specifically at Ecocert COSMOS. The difference between COSMOS Natural and COSMOS Organic There are two levels: COSMOS Natural means that at least 95% of all ingredients are of natural origin. The product must not contain synthetic fragrances, parabens, silicones or microplastics. COSMOS Organic goes a step further: in addition to the 95% natural requirement, at least 20% of the total product must come from organic cultivation (or 95% of the plant-based ingredients). Example: two products, two levels Our Double Hydration Boost Gel + HA (€27.90) is COSMOS Natural certified: 99% natural, 11% organic. The gel is built around hyaluronic acid and Sodium PCA, two powerful moisture-retaining ingredients. Because hyaluronic acid is produced through biotechnology (and thus not directly from a plant), the product falls under Natural instead of Organic. That doesn't make it any less good; it simply means the certification is honest about what's in it. Our Nourishing Facial Oil (€29.90) is COSMOS Organic: 100% natural and 63% organic. Logical: the product consists entirely of plant-based oils and extracts. No water, no synthetic additives, no biotechnological ingredients. Both products are excellent. The difference in certification tells you something about the composition, not about the quality. 3. Recognize the active ingredients A good product not only has natural ingredients, it has the right ingredients in the right concentration. Here are the key active ingredients you can recognize on a label: Hyaluronic acid (Sodium Hyaluronate or Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid): binds up to 1000x its own weight in water. Note: a product with "multi-molecular" hyaluronic acid works on multiple skin layers simultaneously. That's better than one type. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbyl Palmitate, or Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate): a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin and provides a brighter complexion. The form matters: pure ascorbic acid (Ascorbic Acid) is the most potent but also the most unstable. In natural formulations, you often see more stable variants. Niacinamide (Niacinamide or Nicotinamide): versatile ingredient that reduces pores, diminishes hyperpigmentation, and strengthens the skin barrier. Bakuchiol (Bakuchiol): the plant-based alternative to retinol. Clinical studies show comparable anti-aging results, but without the irritation that retinol can cause. Example: Vitamin C Serum Our Vitamin C Serum (€29.90) contains Ascorbyl Palmitate, a stable, oil-soluble form of vitamin C that is less irritating than pure ascorbic acid. On the INCI list, you'll see it alongside other active ingredients such as Sodium Hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) and Tocopherol (vitamin E). What this product shows: a shorter INCI list is not always better or worse. It's about balance. A serum can certainly have a longer list if each ingredient has a function: carrier, active ingredient, preservative, or antioxidant. 4. Recognize plant-based alternatives The skincare industry is evolving. More and more brands are opting for plant-based alternatives to traditional active ingredients. The most well-known example: bakuchiol as an alternative to retinol. Retinol (vitamin A) has been the gold standard for anti-aging for decades. But it has drawbacks: irritation, flaking, sun sensitivity, and it's not suitable during pregnancy. Bakuchiol, extracted from the babchi plant, offers similar results without these side effects. How do you recognize this on a label? Look for "Bakuchiol" in the INCI list. It's listed by name. Other plant-based alternatives you might encounter: Bidens Pilosa (a plant with retinol-like effects) and Rosmarinus Officinalis (rosemary, a natural antioxidant). Example: Natural Retinol Alternative Oil Serum Our Natural Retinol Alternative Oil Serum (€31.90) combines bakuchiol with rosehip oil, jojoba, raspberry, and blueberry oil. It is COSMOS Organic certified: 99% natural and 61% organic. This product is a good example of how you can see on the label that a brand is transparent: the INCI list consists almost entirely of recognizable plant-based oils. No hidden synthetic additives, no endless list of unpronounceable words. 5. Start with the basics: your cleanser tells all Want to learn how to read a label in one product? Start with your cleanser. It's the product you use every day, and its INCI list immediately tells you if a brand has your best interests at heart. What do you look for in a cleanser? Avoid sulfates. Look for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These are aggressive foaming agents that can damage the skin barrier. Natural alternatives use milder surfactants. Welcome nourishing oils. A good cleanser cleanses and nourishes at the same time. Ingredients like Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii), Argan Oil (Argania Spinosa), and Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis) ensure your skin doesn't dry out during cleansing. Check the fragrance. Do you see "Parfum" or "Fragrance" on the label? Then you don't know exactly what's in it; it's a collective name for sometimes dozens of synthetic fragrances. For naturally certified products, "Parfum" will also be there, but the fragrances behind it (such as Linalool, Limonene) are listed separately and come from natural essential oils. You can recognize this by the ➁ symbol. Example: Gentle Cleansing Milk Our Gentle Cleansing Milk (€21.90) is COSMOS Organic certified: 99% natural and 15% organic. The INCI list begins with sunflower oil (Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil) followed by natural emulsifiers and shea butter. No sulfates. No silicones. No synthetic preservatives.
